바벨론 강가에서

사진: 아내와 동네 산책을 나갔다가 회당을 지나면서 찍은 사진입니다. 유대인 아저씨가 어두운 조명을 받으면서 읽고 있는 것은 과연 무엇일까요?

바벨론 강가에서 앉아서 우리는 울었도다.



우리는 바벨의 물가에 앉아서 울었도다.


우리 원수들이 살육의 고함을 지르며 
예루살렘의
지성소를 약탈하던 그 날을 생각하였도다.


그리고 오 예루살렘의 슬픈 딸들이여!
모두가 흩어져서 울면서 살았구나.



우리가 자유롭게 흐르는 강물을 바라볼 때에
그들은 노래를 강요하였지만, 


우리 승리하는 노래는 아니었도다.


우리의 오른 손, 영원히 말라버릴지어다!


원수를 위하여 우리의 고귀한 하프를 연주하기 전에



버드나무에 하프는 걸려있고
 그 소리는 울리지 않는구나.

오 예루살렘아! 
너의 영광이 끝나던 시간에


하지만 너는 징조를 남겼다.


나는 결코 그 부드러운 곡조를 
약탈자의 노래에 맞추지 않겠노라고.

When our foe, in the hue of his slaughters, 
  

Made Salem's high places his prey; 


And ye, oh her desolate daughters! 
  

Were scattered all weeping away. 
 


While sadly we gazed on the river 
  

Which rolled on in freedom below, 


They demanded the song; but, oh never 
  

That triumph the stranger shall know!


May this right hand be withered for ever, 
  

Ere it string our high harp for the foe! 
  


On the willow that harp is suspended, 
  

Oh Salem!  its sound should be free; 


And the hour when thy glories were 
ended 
  

But left me that token of thee: 


And ne'er shall its soft tones be blended 
  

With the voice of the spoiler by me!
