Julen Guerrero tells his exclusive Eurosport column that he feels "Ronaldinho has been without doubt the'in-form player in world football" over the past two months and that he deserves the Ballon D'Or award, which is due to be presented in Paris on Monday.
Without wishing to state the obvious, Ronaldinho is a person who always has a smile on his face. He seems to enjoy what he is doing, on and off the field, and the simplicity and joy connects very well with people.
He enlightens me. He treats the ball as if it's part of his body. He knows how to control it perfectly and it seems to be tied to his foot. He knows at all times where the opposition is and where he has to orient the play. Furthermore, his explosive change of pace and direction allows him to evade any tight marker, as he demonstrates every week.
For me it is very important that he is able to control the ball equally well with both feet, which makes it easier for him to lean towards either side while moving and allows him to shoot with either foot without thinking. This season, furthermore, he is creating goals with more ease, something which always makes it easier to win this Golden Ball award.
In all ways, I imagine that the selection of the journalists of France Football was never easy. There are big players that have played an extraordinary season... Frank Lampard, Andriy Shevchenko, Paolo Maldini, Steven Gerrard, Thierry Henry, Kaka and his own team-mate Eto'o could easily have won this trophy.
But for Ronaldinho there have been some other factors that have helped him win. On one hand, there is the moment of the presentation of the trophy. During the last two months Ronaldinho has without doubt been the most in-form player in world football. On the other hand with him it is guaranteed that he will always try something different, something spectacular, and that you will be entertained.
Through eurosport.es I'd like to take the opportunity to congratulate him for this prize. Only the great ones achieve this. Ronaldinho can define an era and he knows that this is only the first step towards it. He has all the skills and attributes to do this.
